Dr Mohammad Munir
BSc MBChB MRCGP
I qualified from Leeds University in 1994. After a number of hospital jobs, I joined Wilson Street as a Partner in 2004.
I live in Derby with my wife and 4 children. I aspire to providing high quality care to all our patients and feel we achieve this at Wilson Street.
Dr Komal Raj
MB ChB (2003 Birmingham) MRCGP DCH DRCOG DGM
Confirming the high standards of graduates from’ Brum Uni’, I qualified in 2003 and got through the VTS training without hugging too many trees. Luckily, I stumbled upon Wilson St and started in July ’08 and have felt right at home. Apart from the high standards of medical practice, there is a sense of belonging with support and communication aplenty. Having been a Nottingham lad, it even surprises me to have ended up in Derby!
I strongly believe in life outside of medicine and maintain a healthy interest in movies, music and recently restaurants. A keen follower of cricket and I have been working on my golf swing. I have also joined a medical education university course and am proud of my new student card.
Dr Drew Smith
BSc. (Hons) (2002 Dundee) MBChB (2007 Dundee) MRCGP DPD
Born in Motherwell, in the west of Scotland, I moved to Dundee in 1999 to study my first degree in Anatomical Sciences and then stayed on there to study medicine and commence my Foundation training.
I relocated to Derby in 2009 to undertake Core Medical Training (CMT) with original plans to pursue a career in Cardiology, but after completion of CMT in 2011 began GP training with my first placement in Wilson Street Surgery.
I returned to Wilson Street in 2013 for my VTS3 year and was honoured to be asked to take up a partnership. It is a supportive, efficient and friendly practice.
Beyond my core General Practice work, I have a specialist interest in Dermatology – including Minor Surgery, Joint injections, and work in the wider Health & Social Care system undertaking a number of Clinical Leadership roles.
I live in Belper with my Golden Retriever, Daisy, and enjoy the gym, walking, and travel, and have a fondness for malt whisky – in moderation of course.
Dr Larry Higgs
BMedSci BMBS (2006 Nottingham) MRCGP DRCOG
Originally from the Cotswolds, I now call the East Midlands my home, moving to Nottingham to study medicine in 2001 and never leaving! I was lucky enough to join Wilson Street as a trainee in 2008 and completed my training in 2011.
After a brief stint elsewhere, I was thrilled to return to Wilson Street in 2016 as a partner, as I believe we offer the highest in clinical excellence in Primary Care. I work full time at Wilson Street, and also occasionally for the out-of-hours GP service and the extended hours service.
I am a GP Trainer, about which I am extremely passionate, and also lead on prescribing, cancer and end-of-life care. When not at work I love to walk, read, game and cook, and spend time with my lovely wife and five children; please do not let this figure influence your opinion of my ability to provide advice on contraception!
Dr Tia Gandhi
MuDr (Prague 2011) DoD MRCGP
After spending my childhood mostly in and around Liverpool, I went to study at university abroad in Prague. I returned to complete my foundation training in Stoke on Trent. Following this, I moved to Derby where I undertook my core medical training and have remained in Derby to train as a GP.
I joined Wilson Street in October 2018 as a GP associate and then became a Partner in April 19. I love being part of a team that delivers a high standard of holistic care. I live with my husband and my house bunny and when I am not working, I enjoy travelling and trying different cuisines from across the world.
Dr Shehla Imtiaz-Umer
BSc (Hons) MSc BMBS MRCGP DRCOG DCH
I was born in Derby and am proud to be from Normanton. Having initially studied in Leicester and lived in Kent, I worked in pharmaceutical and academic research before taking the leap and leaving research to become a medic. I studied Graduate Entry Medicine at the University of Nottingham and qualified in 2012.
I completed all my training in the Midlands and joined Wilson Street as a locum before being honoured with the opportunity to become a Partner.
The practice is a standard bearer to providing excellent patient care and I’m proud to be part of such a forward-thinking, innovative and truly patient caring team. I love being able to serve the community that I grew up in and hope as a team we can make positive changes to our patients’ lives.
I have an interest in paediatrics, women’s health and providing palliative care as well as training medical students and registrars (although I am not a trainer – yet!)
I also work on an ad-hoc basis for the out of hours service, Derbyshire Health United. I also have an interest in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion for staff across Derbyshire and also address health inequalities for our patients.
I’m married to Umer and have two children, Inayah and Mohammed-Zayyan. In the little spare time I have, I enjoy reading, volunteering for a local charity, swimming, playing netball as well as enjoying hikes in the Peak District.
Dr Brian Richards
BSc MSc MBBS MRCGP
I was born in Sierra Leone. I moved to the UK as a young adult, starting off in research looking at biomaterials and microbiology before being catapulted into medicine via the graduate entry pathway.
I have completed GP training in Derby and love it here. As a trainee I spent most of the general practice training at Wilson Street and enjoyed it for a variety of reasons.
I have several interests all closely linked to providing good quality care for our patients and spending time with my family.
Dr Mahesh Ramanathan

Following nearly a decade working as GP mainly in Nottingham, I am both proud and delighted to be joining Wilson St as a GP partner.
In my spare time I enjoy running, quizzes, reading and playing a variety of sports badly with my kids!
Dr Emily Beattie
BSc MBBS (London) MRCGP, Dr Beattie is an associate GP
Having started life in Wiltshire, Derbyshire has been my home from the age of 7, but I moved to Derby after finishing university in London in 2010. I trained as a GP in Derby, and first came to Wilson Street in 2015 as a trainee. I completed my GP training slower than some in 2018 having started my family, and promptly moved back to Wilson Street to join a great team as a salaried GP and who I feel deliver great quality care. I enjoy lots of aspects of general practice, but mostly the opportunity to get to know people over a long period. I live locally with my husband and 2 young boys.
