Travel Vaccines

Planning a trip abroad? Depending on your destination, you may need vaccinations to protect yourself from serious diseases not commonly found in the UK.

Booking Travel Vaccines

To book a travel vaccination appointment please complete the travel risk assessment form using the link below.

  • You must complete this form at least 8 weeks before your date of travel.
  • You must complete this form once for every member of your party who is registered with us.
  • If a member of your party is not registered with us, they will need to contact their own GP.

After we Receive your Form

Once we have received your completed form, we will arrange a telephone appointment with a practice nurse.

These appointments will be arranged in the order of the date patients are traveling, not the date the form is completed.

In your telephone appointment, the nurse will discuss your travel plans with you and review your medical records. They will then determine if you require any additional vaccines to keep you safe and protected while abroad.

If you do require vaccines, we will arrange a face-to-face appointment for you to have these.

Some vaccines require multiple doses in order to be effective. The nurse will advise you of these at the time and will arrange multiple appointments if necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why do Travel Vaccines Matter?

Travel vaccines help protect you from infections such as:

  • Hepatitis A
  • Typhoid
  • Yellow fever
  • Cholera
  • Rabies
  • Japanese encephalitis

Some countries also require proof of vaccination before entry. Without it, you may be denied entry or required to have the vaccine at the border.

Do I need travel vaccines for every trip abroad?

Not always. It depends on your destination, planned activities, and your health history. Some countries pose higher risks for certain diseases, especially if you’re visiting rural areas or staying for extended periods.

How far in advance should I book my travel vaccine appointment?

You must complete the travel risk assessment form at least 8 weeks before you travel.

Some vaccines require multiple doses or take time to become effective.

If you are traveling in less than 8 weeks, please contact a local pharmacy and see if they will be able to vaccinate you. If the pharmacy needs your vaccination records, you can request these with the medical report request form.

Are travel vaccines free on the NHS?

Some are, including:

  • Hepatitis A
  • Typhoid
  • Cholera
  • Polio (as part of the DTP booster)

Others, like yellow fever or rabies, may need to be arranged privately. We’ll advise you during your consultation.

Can I get all my travel vaccines at Wilson Street Surgery?

We offer many travel vaccines and will guide you through what’s available here and what may need to be arranged elsewhere.

What happens during a travel health consultation?

Our nurse will:

  • Review your travel plans and medical history
  • Check your current immunisation status
  • Recommend vaccines and other health precautions
  • Provide advice on food, water, insect bites, and travel safety
Do I need to bring anything to my appointment?

Please bring:

  • Details of your travel itinerary (countries, dates, rural vs urban)
  • Any previous vaccination records (if available)
  • A list of current medications
Can children get travel vaccines?

Yes. We’ll tailor recommendations based on age, destination, and health status. Some vaccines are suitable for children, while others may not be necessary.
