Important update about St Thomas Road Surgery branch hours

Why are we contacting you?

We would like to share with you a proposal to reduce hours at St Thomas Road to meet the wider demand at Wilson Street.

There is no reduction in appointments or staff.

About Us and Our Sites

Our practice is made up of three sites serving the Derby City area:

• Wilson Street Surgery (main site): Open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6.30pm
• Taddington Road Surgery (branch): Open Monday to Friday, 8am to midday
• St Thomas Road Surgery (branch): Open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6.30pm

What’s the proposed Change?

We’re proposing to change the opening hours at our St Thomas Road branch.

If agreed this change will happen from May 2026.

St Thomas Road Surgery would be open Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm (closing two and a half hours earlier than at present).

Why Are We Proposing This Change?

Since taking over St Thomas Road Surgery two years ago, we’ve invested extra staff and resources to make sure we’re meeting local needs. After reviewing how patients use our services, we’ve noticed that:

• Most patients prefer to book afternoon appointments at Wilson Street Surgery.
• St Thomas Road is busiest in the mornings, with fewer appointments being used in the later part of the day.
• Some patients find it easier to get to Wilson Street due to better transport links and parking.

By closing St Thomas Road a little earlier, we can move clinical staff to Wilson Street in the afternoons, making it easier for more patients to get seen where demand is highest.

What Will Change?

• St Thomas Road Surgery will close at 4pm instead of 6.30pm, Monday to Friday.
• Some staff will transfer from St Thomas Road to Wilson Street in the afternoons. This means more appointments will be available where most people want them.

What Will Not Change?

• The total number of doctor and nurse appointments will stay the same – no appointments are being cut.
• You can still book appointments, get advice and use online consultations or the telephone, even after St Thomas Road closes for the day.

Home visits and urgent appointments will continue to be available as they are now.

What happens next?

All the feedback will be compiled into a report and fed into the final decision-making process. The decision will be taken by NHS Derby and Derbyshire ICB’s Primary Care Subgroup. We will keep everyone informed about the next steps and the outcome of this decision. The engagement period will end on 29th March. Please make sure to send in your feedback before this date.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Will I still be able to see or speak to a GP?

Absolutely

Access to GPs and appointments are not being reduced. Appointments are being redistributed to improve access based on patient demand. You will still access the practice and appointments in the same manner.

Are there going to be less appointments?

No

As above, they are being redistributed based on demand across all three practice sites.

Does this mean the practice is closing?

No

The practice will remain open for the new hours indicated and there are absolutely no plans to close this branch surgery. We require estates to improve our services, and this branch is part of those long-term plans.

What happens if I need urgent medical help outside the new opening hours?

If urgent medical attention is needed then patients should access the service they feel is most suitable to their needs. This includes, but is not limited to, calling 999/111 or calling the practice appointment line to be triaged as appropriate.

Will this affect appointments for long‑term conditions or routine care?

No

There are no plans to change the nature of appointments or overall service provision.

Why can’t the practice just recruit more staff?

This is not a question of staffing. It is about re-arranging services around the needs of the whole patient population. Practices also have to work within existing budgets.

Will this affect vulnerable patients or those who struggle to access care?

No

Patients will still be able to access care through lots of different ways across the three sites. Patients will also be able to access the range of professionals and services provided by the practice.

Is this change permanent?

This is anticipated as a permanent change, but we evaluate our services on a continual basis, and such evaluation has led to this proposal.

What should I do if I’m worried about access to care?

If you are concerned, please provide feedback through the relevant channels, or attend one of our engagement events. Your concerns can be heard and responded to.
