120th year Anniversary Celebrations Celebration Week – 15th-19th June 2015

The week of celebrations was a great success and created a good feeling amongst patients that came in during the week and all of the voluntary helpers that supported us. The press coverage the weekend before and the sound bite slot with Dr Nuttall on BBC Radio Derby set us up for a great week of activities.

A big thank you goes out to everyone at the surgery involved in organising the week’s events. We must pay tribute to the amount of time our PPG have put in to making this event the success it was. Their involvement was the eye-catching noticeboard display and Newsletter advertising the week, the book sale manned by them all day on Thursday and Friday as well as promoting the PPG (and we hopefully have some new members as a result). A special thanks to Julie (PPG member) for making the beautiful Wilson Street tribute cake (above) and the pinafore for Dr Daniells to wear!

The drawing competition proved popular with our younger patients and the standard was very high. So much so that Dr Little and Dr Daniells couldn’t decide on an overall winner so we had 3 winners! Winners have been presented with a sketch book, blank canvas, pastels and felt pens and the 3 winning entries are to be placed in the waiting room with copies at Taddington Road. Raffle Tickets for the Hamper sold like hot cakes as did the (not so hot) cakes that were sold on Monday and Tuesday. The winner of the Hamper full of goodies was patient EB (and wishes to remain anonymous).

The idea of ‘themeing’ each day around different groups of patients provided a useful structure and our chosen charities were Age UK Derby, Rainbows, Carers Association, Padley Centre, Derby City Mission and Take Heart Derby.

Monday was Older People’s Day. Dr Nuttall had prepared some mental agility tests for patients to try out whilst waiting for the Doctor or to take home and have some fun with. The cake sale was a real hit and we had information displays from Age UK Derby and the Royal Voluntary Service.

Tuesday was Children and Young People’s Day. Any cakes left over from Monday soon disappeared! Livewell Advisers were on hand to promote health and fitness for the young. Balloon creations were made and handed out to the youngsters in the form of cats/dogs/elephants/crowns…anything they asked for. Rainbows had a well- stocked table display of children’s toys and tombola gifts.

Wednesday was Carers Day. The Derby Carers Association manned a stall during the day and the afternoon was handed over to a local Therapist who turned a consulting room in to a haven of peace and tranquility for the benefit of some serious pampering for our patient’s Carers. Suffice to say, she was fully booked!

Thursday was Homelessness Day and supported by The Padley Centre and Deventio Healthy Futures team with displays of how they help provide for the Homeless of Derby. Derby City Mission was also present with information to support the homeless. The PPG were also kept busy manning the book stall.

Friday was Health & Wellbeing Day and Livewell made a second appearance this week to promote healthy living for all, to offer advice on smoking cessation and offer free Health Checks to patients. We had representation from Take Heart Derby with us who set up a presentation to promote this worthwhile local social support group for heart patients, families and carers. The PPG were still kept busy with the book sales.

The idea behind this celebration was just to celebrate how long Wilson Street has been an established surgery but also to help raise money for local charities and we raised a total of £262.80 for our local chosen charities.

Thank you to everyone involved in making the week such a success and to everyone who gave generously to help our chosen charities.
